NASCAR Race Mom with Kyle Petty |
I was almost six when I got my first motorcycle. My first motorcycle was a Yamaha 80 that I got in 1966. It was a little dirt bike. Then I went from an 80 to a 100 to a 125 to a 250. I had the 250 forever. Then when my uncle was killed, my mother’s brother, I inherited his Sportster which I drove to school.
Then in a more serious mood; Kyle discussed his passion for the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America:
Honestly we started this ride twenty years ago because Harry and I wanted to ride across the country, and you only get two free off weeks (in the NASCAR schedule); so everyone got mad at us when we said we were going to ride back from California . . . so we decided that we would ride for charity.
During those first few years, we would just stop at children’s hospitals. Then when Adam’s accident happen, we built the camp. Now that is what drives it, the camp and trying to raise money to send kids to camp.
It costs $2,800 to $3,200 to send a kid to camp and it is totally free for them. So the more money we raise off the ride, the more kids we can send to camp. We have sent 17,000 kids and families to camp in the ten years the camp has been up and running. That is why we do the ride.
* Located on 84 acres in Randleman, N.C., Victory Junction exists to enrich the lives of children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses by creating camping experiences that are memorable, fun, empowering, physically safe and medically sound.
