Saturday Highlights | Valencia NASCAR Fest 2016
The first green flag of the 2016 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series season waved on April 23 at the Circuit De La Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo in Valencia, Spain with the third edition of the hugely popular Valencia NASCAR Fest.
Alon Day (#54 CAAL Racing Chevrolet SS) started from the pole and led
every lap to grab the checkered flag in an eventful ELITE 1 Round 2 at
the Circuit De La Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo to celebrate CAAL
Racing’s 40th anniversary in motorsport. The Tel-Aviv-native fought off
every attach brought by Anthony Kumpen (#24 PK Carsport Chevrolet SS)
and Frederic Gabillon (#3 Tepac RDV Compétition Ford Mustang) in a race
that saw an incredibly tight battle for the lead.
“This one was the hardest win of my life,” said the driver of the #54 CAAL Racing Chevrolet, who won for the fourth time in the last six NASCAR Whelen Euro Series and also led the Junior “Jerome Sarran” classification. “I knew Fred and Anthony were faster than me, the pressure was incredibly high but we managed to win anyway and it is a fantastic feeling!”
Stienes Longin (#11 PK Carsport Chevrolet SS) swept the season
opening weekend in the ELITE 2 Division at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in
Valencia, Spain by leading from flag to flag the ELITE 2 Round 2. The
Belgian started from the pole and perfectly mastered two early restarts
to take the checkered flag with a 2.7 margin on his rivals at the end of
an intense 8-lap dash to the finish after the second and last caution
of the race.
“It was a tough race and I had to manage two restarts, but I was able to control the situation and stretch my lead in the end,” said Longin, who won his third career NASCAR race. “The team gave me a perfect car and now we are in a really good position for the championship.”
