SRX Event Includes an Autograph Session

Eldora Speedway is a half-mile dirt racing facility located in western Ohio. The ‘Big E’ is owned by three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion, Tony Stewart. The Indiana native purchased Eldora from legendary promotor Earl Baltes in 2004. Baltes built Eldora in 1954 and had been the sole owner of the facility from day number one.

Eldora plays host to some of the largest dirt racing events in the country, including the Dirt Late Model Dream, Kings Royal, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and World 100 – all of which attract over 20,000 spectators on an annual basis. 

 

The Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) is bringing ‘Thursday Night Thunder’ to Eldora Speedway tomorrow. The event includes an autograph session with some of racings legends.

SRX Autograph Session Details:

• The autograph session will run from 5:00pm to 5:45pm in the Fan Zone barn. A wristband will be required for entry to the autograph session.

 

Wristband Details:

• There will be 400 wristbands available and they can be picked up at the official Eldora Merchandise Store as soon as the gates open at 4:00pm. The Merchandise Store is located at the base of the Turn 3 Suites.

 

Autograph Session Layout:

• Drivers will spread out at individual tables within the building. Once in the building, fans will have the opportunity to get in any driver’s line they wish and can continue that process of picking and choosing their drivers until the 5:45pm end time. (This setup allows us to admit a higher number of fans to the autograph session as opposed to a single line)

 

Notes:

• **If any driver lines reach a point during the autograph session that fans won’t make the front of the line by the 5:45pm cutoff, officials may cap those lines. **In an effort to keep lines moving and allow fans to gather as many autographs as possible, there is a strict limit of one item per driver.

Castroneves Celebrates SRX 75 Victory by Climbing Five Flags Fence

 

Spider-Man scaled another wall Saturday night just like he has done countless times in a decorated IndyCar career. This time, though, four-time Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves was doing it in Pensacola. Climbing the catchfence. At Five Flags Speedway. Helio … Castroneves.

 

The Five Flags faithful—hot and sticky from a blistering Saturday afternoon—showered him with roars of approval. Castroneves pumped his fists skyward, which elicited more cheers from a thoroughly entertained and jam-packed crowd. To describe the scene as surreal would be to undersell the moment. It was exactly the chill-bumps picture the Superstar Racing Experience (SRX Series) envisioned when the star-studded series targeted short-track racing’s most iconic venues.

 

Castroneves, a late addition Friday night to make it a thirteen-car field, took control of the race from his IndyCar buddy Tony Kanaan on Lap 62 of the SRX 75 season opener and cruised to the checkered flag.

“This is fantastic!” a genuinely giddy Castroneves said while being interviewed by Matt Yocum, as the race was televised live on CBS. “I don’t know what happened to Tony. It was super cool running side-by-side with him. At the end of the day, we worked really hard to be in Victory Lane.”

 

Late Model star and Five Flags favorite Bubba Pollard finished runner-up and 2008 Daytona 500 champion Ryan Newman rounded out the podium. Pollard more than held his own with the NASCAR, IndyCar and other motorsports champions. He won the night’s opening heat race and battled back to second after a flat tire cost him valuable track position early in the 75 lapper while running in the top-five. Pollard pitted and restarted tail end.

 

“I hate that I had a flat tire, but these (SRX) guys were good,” Pollard said. “It brought me back to my early Super Late Model days where you’re hanging on and doing all you gotta do.

 

“Hopefully, we made the short-track community proud. And to do it at Five Flags makes it so special. This is the place that taught me how to win at other places. Five Flags taught me patience and respect to my fellow racers.” Pollard started on the pole and led for most of the first 20 laps as he and Newman waged what was the first of many battles Saturday.

 

“Bubba gave me a heckuva run,” Newman said. “Thanks for all fans for coming out. It was hot for us; I can’t imagine how it was for them. I love this opportunity to race with the best.”

 

Kanaan took the lead from Pollard on Lap 18 and built a healthy lead until a caution stacked the field back up and allowed Castroneves to make his timely pass late in the race en route to the win.

Camping World SRX Series at 5 Flags

 

When the idea of a Superstar Racing Experience touring series was first tossed around a few years ago, the immediate goal was focusing on iconic short-track speedways.

 

As any Five Flags Speedway loyalist will attest, a list of historic short tracks would be incomplete if it didn’t include the famed half-mile asphalt oval tucked away two miles off I-10, on Pine Forest Road.

Cut to today and the Camping World SRX Series is opening its second season Saturday night at Five Flags with an otherworldly car collection of NASCAR legends, Indianapolis 500 winners and champions from other professional motorsports series. The 12-car field includes present and future Hall of Famers, such as Bill Elliott, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti, Paul Tracy and others.

 

“We were humbled when we received the call that we were being considered for one of the six events,” Five Flags General Manager Tim Bryant said. “There are hundreds of short tracks around the country that would jump at a chance to host an SRX event. We are over-the-top excited to put on a great show for Pensacola and showcase our city.”

 

The 75-lap SRX race brings a CBS TV production crew, which will broadcast the two-hour event live to a national audience beginning at 7 p.m. District 1 and Board of Escambia County Commissioners Chairman Jeff Bergosh believes the two-hour Saturday primetime spotlight will enhance the city’s profile and deliver a “shot in the arm financially from all the visitors who attend.”

 

“This Saturday's arrival of the SRX series in Pensacola at Five Flags Speedway will be an incredible experience for Escambia County and District 1,” Bergosh continued. “With renowned drivers, this will be like an all-star event. I look forward to attending Saturday's race.”

 

General admission is $35 with advanced reserved seats $40 and $45 for reserved seats on race day. Grandstands open at 11 a.m. Saturday with a brief SRX autograph session beginning at 2:15 p.m. approximately. There will be a fan zone under a tent behind the grandstands and cooling misters sprinkled throughout the facility for fans to beat the blistering June heat.

 

The Faith Chapel Outlaws are the appetizer to SRX’s main course and will vie for a winner-take-all $3,000 in their 50-lap feature. At least 25 Outlaws will qualify at 4 p.m. Saturday before dropping the green flag at 5. Just a few years old, the Outlaws continue to be among the most competitive series at Pensacola’s high banks. Pensacola veteran Logan Boyett leads Panama City teenager Timothy Watson by a single point in the season standings heading into the big-dollar 50 lapper.

 

Included among the dozen SRX stars is Deep South Cranes Blizzard Series stud Bubba Pollard. Pollard earned his spot by having the best average finish (third) at the Pepperjack Kennels Twin Blizzard weekend in early April. Pollard is a machine at Five Flags with 24 Late Model career victories.

 

“(SRX’s) idea of adding a local into the field was really smart,” Bryant said. “It allows some of our regular race fans to identify with one of their own among the best of the best. We felt, with so many deserving drivers, the only fair way to do it was let them earn the right into the SRX race and that’s what Bubba did. I know a legion of fans from Senoia, Ga., are coming down and he already has a huge fan base here in Pensacola.”

 

SRX has eight full-time drivers for the 2022 season—those include Andretti, Labonte, Stewart, Daytona 500 winners Ryan Newman and Michael Waltrip and 2012 Indianapolis 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay. Elliott, Kanaan and Ernie Francis Jr. all raced with SRX last season.

 

“The list of drivers that SRX is bringing is incredible,” Bryant said. “It is an honor for any racetrack to host such legendary drivers. We’ve been working every day to wash, paint and spruce up this 60-year-old racetrack to make a good presentation before a nationally television audience.”

Hailie Deegan Demonstrates Her Ability

Hailie Rochelle Deegan started her career in NASCAR at the age of seventeen in 2018 while participating in the #NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. She managed to become the first female driver victorious in West Series races! She competed in the ARCA Menards Series West in 2018 and '19 for Bill McAnally, earning three victories.

 

She was the 2020 ARCA Menards Series Rookie of the Year, finishing third in the point standings and earned four top 5 and 17 top 10 finishes.

 

Hailie Deegan is currently in her rookie season in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, driving the No. 1 David Gilliland Racing Ford. She is seventeenth in the point standings and third in the Sunoco Rookie of the Year battle.

 

NASCAR Race Mom has been watching Ms. Deegan’s on-track progress over this short four years and must express personal fatigue of hearing that Hailie is a ‘good female racer.’ Hailie’s aggressive performance at Knoxville Raceway last night in the SRX Dirt race proved her talent period, irrespective of gender.

 

 

 

Of the three dirt track ringers employed to spice up the second SRX race, Hailie Deegan provided the best showing spotlighted by her determined last lap pass of Ernie Francis Jr. for a second-place podium finish.

 

“My goal coming into this race was to prove to everyone that I deserved to be here. I feel like we did that tonight, running second to Tony Stewart, that’s a huge accomplishment for me,” said Deegan, “I feel like we just ran a clean race, we just wrapped the bottom, stayed consistent, ran my line and finished second.”

 

Deegan, who is splitting her SRX ride with Tony Kanaan, will be back in the series one more time this season: The July 10 race at Slinger Speedway. NRM cannot wait.

Doug Coby Wins the Inaugural Camping World SRX Series

Doug Coby won the season-opening race of the inaugural Camping World SRX Series Saturday night at Stafford Motor Speedway and scored a win for short-track racers across the United States.

Coby is a six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion and winner of 30 races at Stafford, from the Modified Tour to SK Modifieds to Pro Stocks and Late Models. He earned his 31st and arguably biggest Stafford victory on a national stage, with his triumph in the Camping World SRX Series broadcast live on the CBS Television Network and streamed on Paramount+ Premium.

 

“What a special night for short-track racing in America,” said Coby, who had to fight off NASCAR veteran Greg Biffle for much of the 100-lap race around the half-mile oval. “This is a special night for Stafford Motor Speedway and everybody who is a short-track racer around the country, whether you’re dirt or asphalt.

“Just to have all these fans here and all these drivers – the guy who won the Indy 500 two weeks ago, NASCAR Hall of Famers, Daytona 500 champions, and here I am, Modified Tour guy and homegrown Stafford Speedway guy. It just goes to show there are a lot of good short-trackers out there. I like to think I’m one of them, but there are hundreds of others who are good at their craft and get around their speedway really good. It ain’t going to be easy for any invader, and I love that we were in equal cars.”

 

The Camping World SRX Series features world-class drivers from an array of motorsports backgrounds competing in identically prepared racecars on some of the most iconic short tracks in America. Helio Castroneves, recent winner of the Indianapolis 500 for a record-tying fourth time, was on the same stage as Coby.

 

“We weren’t in Modifieds that I drive all the time,” Coby said. “I haven’t driven a full-bodied car here in 20 years, so it was an adjustment for me. These cars were sporty and fun and the guys figured them out. The guys who were struggling earlier in practice sure figured them out in the heat races and did a great job. I’m just really pumped for everybody in the Modified community. That’s who I represent, that’s who I am and that’s who I’ll always be, so I’m just thrilled to bring it home for them.”

 

How committed was Coby to representing short-track racers in the Camping World SRX Series season opener? He skipped the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Oswego (N.Y.) Speedway to race at Stafford, and that meant missing a race where prior to tonight, Coby was second in the championship standings by only five points.

 

“I’ve got six Tour championships and I’m shooting for seven to tie Mike Stefanik, and if it takes one more year to tie a great like that, I’m happy to wait,” Coby said.

 

Coby finished sixth in the first heat race, and with the field inverted for the second heat race, the Milford, Connecticut-native lined up seventh in the 12-car field. In a prelude to the feature, Coby carved his way toward the front, leading the final two laps to take the win.

 

Victory in the second heat race earned Coby the pole for the feature. He led the first eight laps before three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Tony Stewart took the lead. Marco Andretti led laps 12-15 before Biffle took over on lap 16. Coby, meanwhile, never ran lower than third.

 

With his extensive knowledge of Stafford, Coby worked his way back to the lead, taking the top spot away from Biffle on lap 25. Biffle made Coby earn the spot, as he was never far from the back of his bumper. Biffle occasionally got his nose just to the inside of Coby’s left-rear fender and finally got around him on lap 62, but Coby’s tenacity was unmatched. Coby took the lead away from Biffle on lap 65 and held it until lap 97 when Biffle made one final charge off turn four to briefly take the lead. Coby would have none of it. He got past Biffle one final time to lead the final two laps and cross the stripe .287 of a second ahead of the 19-race winner in the NASCAR Cup Series.

 

“The only thing I screwed up tonight is my exit, and I’d do it all over again if that’s what it takes to win this race,” Coby said. “Thank you, fans.”

 

While the win was special for Coby, it was also bittersweet.

 

“I lost a very good friend of mine this week, Don King,” Coby said. “He was one of my best friends, gave me my first Modified Tour ride, and I know the whole crew was watching tonight.

 

“He’s not just my former owner, he’s one of my best friends. He has been for 20 years. We’re going to have his funeral on Monday and Tuesday and it’s going to be a tough week, but this is an opportunity to show people who believe in somebody that 20 years later they might do something good.

 

“When somebody passes who helped you in racing, you go race and you honor them with a good drive and you tell everybody all about it. I’m just happy to be able to acknowledge him.”

 

Before departing victory lane, Coby also acknowledged the opportunity afforded by the Camping World SRX Series.

 

“Before we go, I want to thank everybody at SRX for doing this,” Coby said. “These guys have busted their butts. I know the guys at the shop, I know how hard you work to get these cars together, and I really appreciate everything you’ve done. Ray Evernham, Tony Stewart, George Pyne, the Montag Group, everybody at CBS, the fans watching at home – a short-tracker won tonight, guys.”

 

For co-founder Evernham, the debut of the Camping World SRX Series was satisfying.

 

“I thought the guys raced hard. We tore up a little bit of equipment but, again, I think the fans enjoyed it and it’s all about the fans,” Evernham said. “The drivers did a great job tonight. I think we’ve got to give ourselves a pretty good mark on tonight based on the crowd reaction. I think it was a good show. It’s pretty humbling because I know how many people work behind the scenes to make this happen, from the television side, the advertising side, the guys who built the cars. It’s humbling that the greatest drivers in the world have come here to support this program and reach out and be right with the folks in grassroots racing.”

 

Stewart, who like Evernham is a co-founder of the Camping World SRX Series and a NASCAR Hall of Famer, relished Coby’s victory.

 

“That’s what this is supposed to be all about,” said Stewart, who finished the race in third. “The whole concept about this was to have fun and to celebrate motorsports, and I think this was a perfect example of that tonight. Let’s go five more weeks and do the same thing at five more tracks.

 

“This is a very aggressive six-week stretch. To be in Connecticut tonight, then to be in Iowa next week on dirt, and to go back and forth like we are for six straight weeks and having to maintain these cars and get loaded up and travel and get set up, fix cars and do that again for six straight weeks is going to be hard on our crew guys, but I wouldn’t substitute any of the guys we’ve got for this. These guys are all excited, and I think seeing their faces after we climbed out of the cars was as much fun as it was to see the fans’ faces. These guys have worked 70-, 80-hour weeks to get 16 cars ready to come to the racetrack. I’m pretty proud of these guys.”

 

The Camping World SRX Series leaves the pavement of Stafford’s half-mile oval behind and transitions to dirt-track racing at the legendary Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway. The second of the Camping World SRX Series’ six-race short-track schedule takes place June 19 at the half-mile, semi-banked dirt oval roughly 40 miles southeast of Des Moines.

 

Joining the Camping World SRX Series regulars at Knoxville are Brian Brown, Scott Bloomquist and Hailie Deegan.

 

Brown is a prolific sprint car driver with 180 career feature victories, including five in the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series. The Grain Valley, Missouri-native is the four-time and reigning 410 Sprint Car champion at Knoxville (2007, 2010, 2019 and 2020), where his 53 wins place him fifth on the track’s all-time win list.

 

Bloomquist has won more than 600 dirt late model events in his 40-year career, including 94 in the Lucas Oil Dirt National Series and 33 sanctioned by the World of Outlaws. From Mooresburg, Tennessee, Bloomquist is a nine-time national champion.

 

Deegan is subbing for Camping World SRX Series regular driver Tony Kanaan, who has a commitment in his native Brazil. Deegan is a fulltime driver in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. The 19-year-old racer from Temecula, California, is a three-time winner in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West and was the first female to win a race in that series.

 

After Knoxville, the Camping World SRX Series stays on the dirt with its June 26 event at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. SRX returns to pavement July 3 at Lucas Oil Raceway near Indianapolis and then ventures north to Slinger (Wis.) Speedway on July 10 before its season finale July 17 at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.

 

Every Camping World SRX Series race will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. ET on the CBS Television Network with streaming live on Paramount+ Premium.
