Jake Leatherman is a young NASCAR Fan who recently lost his battle against Juvenile Myelomoncytic Leukemia at the tender age of five years.
Jake’s mom Crystal sent an email to Molly Grantham at WBTV Channel 3, a local news affiliate in Charlotte, North Carolina with a special request.
“I want to give my son the sendoff he deserves,” she wrote. “He recently got into NASCAR and absolutely loves Richard Petty. He loved calling him ‘The King’. But Jake loves a lot of the other cars as well. The Lowe's car. The M&M's U.S.A. car. Lots of cars. He loved them all. I was wondering if you knew anyone who would be willing to come in uniform and help carry my baby? Jake never got the chance to go to a race,” Crystal added “I know it seems an odd ask, but we’d love to honor Jake this way. It would mean so much. We’d greatly appreciate any ideas.”
Per his mother’s request, members of several different NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams (including Team Penske, Stewart-Haas Racing, Richard Childress Racing, and even the team owned by Jake’s favorite driver, Richard Petty Motorsports) attended Jake’s funeral today. Drivers Matt DiBenedetto, and Ryan Ellis were also on-hand to remember Jake.
This is one of the reason’s NASCAR Race Mom loves this sport. Rest in Peace Jake.
Perspective. Much needed. This is the power of people, and love. #MollysKids READ: https://t.co/5kV48yNHUL— Molly Grantham WBTV (@MollyGrantham) November 9, 2016
