Shane van Gisbergen Sweeps Chicago Street Race Weekend with Cup Win

 

Shane van Gisbergen won the Chicago Street Race on Sunday afternoon for his third career NASCAR Cup Series victory.

 

The race ended under caution after Cody Ware crashed into the tire barriers at Turn 6. SVG took the white flag as the leader of the race just before the yellow flag flew.

 

Shane van Gisbergen became only the second driver in NASCAR history to sweep the pole and race for both the Xfinity and Cup Series in the same weekend at the same track when he won today’s race on the streets of Chicago.

 

The only driver to have swept both the pole and race for both Xfinity and Cup in the same weekend at the same track was Kyle Busch at Indianapolis in 2016.

 

"It's so hot this weekend," van Gisbergen told TNT Sports. "The track was really slick, the times were a lot slower, and the margin for error was very thin."

Shane van Gisbergen Overcomes Late Zilisch Surge for Xfinity Win in Chicago

 

Shane van Gisbergen (SVG) bested teammate Connor Zilisch on a restart with two laps to go to win Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at the Chicago Street Course for the second consecutive season. He won after starting on the pole and leading 27 of the 50 laps on the 12-turn, 2.2-mile street course.

 

The win is the New Zealand native’s sixth national series win overall and fourth in the Xfinity circuit. Additionally, Shane is the sixth different driver to win this season for JR Motorsports. 

 

"Thought it was going to be a lost cause when the strategy went wrong, but it worked out well," said van Gisbergen. "Thanks to JRM, the car was a rocket."

 

Speaking more on the strategy, SVG said: "I knew that was what we were gonna do, but when so many cars didn't follow us, it was a bit of worry, but then we had tire grip at the end. Really cool battles with everyone. I enjoyed it."

Derrick Rose to Serve as Grand Marshal for NASCAR Chicago Street Race

 

The NASCAR Chicago Street Race announced that Derrick Rose will serve as the Grand Marshal for the NASCAR Cup Series’ Grant Park 165 on Sunday, July 6 in Grant Park. The Chicago Bulls legend and 2011 NBA Most Valuable Player will give the most famous command in all of sports: “Drivers, Start Your Engines” as a part of a special pre-race celebration that shines a spotlight on the best of Chicago to a global audience.

 

“Chicago is one of the best sports towns in the world, and NASCAR is proud to be a part of that historic Chicago sports culture,” said Julie Giese, NASCAR Chicago Street Race President. “Derrick is one of the most beloved sports icons in the city’s history, and we look forward to having him get NASCAR’s only street race underway.”

 

The Chicago native became the youngest NBA MVP in history when he won the award in 2011 at age 22, leading the Bulls to the best record in the NBA that season. Rose spent the first eight years of his professional career with his hometown Bulls, becoming a three-time NBA All-Star, 2009 NBA Rookie of the Year, and capturing the hearts of Chicago basketball fans with his explosive athleticism and unwavering dedication to the city. During the 2025-26 season, the Chicago Bulls will host a ceremony to retire Rose’s jersey.

 

“It’s an honor to be part of such an incredible event in my hometown,” said Rose. “Chicago has always supported me throughout my career, and I’m excited to give back to the fans and be part of this amazing racing weekend in Grant Park.”

It must have been so tempting to ‘throw it in there’ and possibly take out the front of the field

An unsung hero is someone or something that has done great work, provided a great benefit, or performed a heroic deed, but has not received the credit or recognition they deserve

 

By now almost everyone has heard the NASCAR Cinderella story about New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen, the first driver to win a race in his first NASCAR Cup Series start since Johnny Rutherford accomplished the feat 60 years ago.

 

This three-time Supercars champion, driving for Trackhouse Racing with Sponsor Enhance Health, Project 91, charged from eighth on a Lap 61 restart to the front of the field and won the series’ first street race on the Chicago Street Course in overtime.

 

Don’t get me wrong, NASCAR Race Mom (NRM) was impressed with the unexpected drive. The racing was even more exciting because the pass for first was not made once, but twice due to an ill-timed caution.

 

It was amazing racing . . . . . not only on van Gisbergen’s part but on the part of second place finisher - Justin Haley.

 

Haley started the ‘Grant Park 220’ from 37th after not being able to qualify due to unapproved adjustments.

 

After staying out at the end of stage two, Haley would take over the race lead to begin the final stage, but would need to save fuel if the remainder of the race were to go green. Haley continued to lead as more cautions fell throughout the final stage, leading a total of 23 laps.

 

When a caution fell with eight laps remaining, Haley fought to keep his lead on the restart over the No. 91, who had sixteen-laps-fresher tires, but ultimately lost the battle for first. Haley went on to finish second.

 

It would have been easy to get caught up in the fray as Justin sparred with the world-class driver, van Gisbergen who was on sixteen-laps better tires. However, in a mature move, Justin raced hard but clean.

 

“Yeah, it was tough,” Haley said. “I put it in the tire barrier yesterday and we stayed up all night. I stayed with the guys through the rain and rewrapped this thing, put a new body on it…

 

“Obviously congrats to Project 91. It sucks, obviously, where we are right now we don’t have a… we aren’t in position to win every week, so coming that close obviously is not what you want.

 

“But just really proud of everyone at Kaulig Racing and what an awesome event. Can’t wait to come back next year.”

 

It must have been so tempting to ‘throw it in there’ and possibly take out the front of the field. In a culture where winning is everything, the clean drive by Justin Haley on the streets of Chicago treated the fans to first-class competition and their fairy tale ending. You have a new fan in NRM Justin Haley.

Cole Custer won the inaugural NASCAR Xfinity Series race on the Chicago Street Course on Sunday after the event was shortened due to inclement weather.

 

Custer, who earned the pole position in Saturday’s qualifying session, led each of the 25 laps completed. The Loop 121 was halted at Lap 25 Saturday afternoon for lightning in the area, necessitating a red flag. Sustained lightning prevented the race from resuming Saturday, and heavy rain Sunday thwarted any attempts to resume the action.

 

NASCAR rules state a race is ruled official either at its halfway mark or at the conclusion of Stage 2, whichever comes first. In this instance, Lap 28 would have signified halfway and deemed the event official. However, because of the unique circumstances surrounding the street course, officials chose to instead rule the Xfinity Series race complete.

 

“With standing water and flooding a significant issue at the race track and throughout the city, there was no option to return to racing prior to shifting to NASCAR Cup Series race operations,” NASCAR said in a statement. “Throughout the entire planning process for the Chicago Street Race, our relationship with the City of Chicago has been strong and among the most valuable assets in reaching this historic weekend. In the spirit of that partnership, returning on Monday for the completion of a NASCAR Xfinity Series event two laps short of halfway was an option we chose not to employ. Based on several unprecedented circumstances, NASCAR has made the decision to declare Cole Custer the winner of the race.”

 

Custer executed flawless restarts Saturday in the No. 00 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford to maintain the lead around the 2.2-mile, 12-turn track, hosting the first street race in series history. John Hunter Nemechek finished second ahead of Justin Allgaier, Brett Moffitt and Austin Hill.

With just two days left until festivities begin in downtown Chicago for the NASCAR street race, fans and newcomers alike are having a difficult time picturing stock cars zooming past major landmarks and a majestic skyline.

 

The unprecedented NASCAR race features drivers maneuvering through a uniquely challenging 2.2-mile course, taking the vehicles on some of Chicago's most recognizable streets with twists and turns far from what drivers are accustomed to on July 1-2.

 

The race will travel through sections of downtown streets around and near Grant Park, with drivers spending time on notable streets such as DuSable Lake Shore Drive, Columbus Drive and Michigan Avenue.

 





Here is a turn-by-turn breakdown of the 12-turn street race, which is set to take place on July 2, 2023:

 

Front Straightaway:

The front straightaway and pit road will be housed on South Columbus Drive, running along a two-block stretch that will take the race past the iconic Buckingham Fountain.

 

Turn One:

The drivers will hang a left onto East Balbo Drive, heading toward Lake Michigan.

 

Turn Two:

Drivers will then turn right onto the southbound lanes of DuSable Lake Shore Drive, hurtling toward the Museum Campus with the Field Museum ahead of them and with the softball fields at Grant Park on their right.

 

Turn Three:

The slow right-hand curve in front of the Field Museum will mark the third turn on the track.

 

Turn Four:

Drivers will hang a 90-degree turn onto East Roosevelt Road at the southernmost point of the circuit.

 

Turn Five:

Drivers will then turn back onto South Columbus Drive, heading northward down a long straightaway.

 

Turn Six:

At one of the most interesting parts of the race-track, the drivers will hang a left onto East Balbo Drive, coming close to where Turn One is located.

 

Turn Seven:

A right-hand turn onto South Michigan Avenue will send the drivers heading back toward the north and into a chicane, representing one of the most challenging spots on the track.

 

Turn Eight:

Drivers will follow the curve of Congress Plaza to the right, beginning a sweeping chicane that will take drivers across Ida B. Wells Drive.

 

Turn Nine:

This turn will be located in front of Buckingham Fountain, and will send drivers back toward the left and back toward Michigan Avenue.

 

Turn Ten:

This turn will put drivers briefly back onto Michigan Avenue, heading northward as they make another quick right-hand turn.

 

Turn Eleven:

This turn represents the most northerly portion of the course, with drivers hanging another right onto East Jackson Drive. The famous lions of the Art Institute of Chicago will also be near this turn at the intersection of Michigan and Jackson.

 

Turn Twelve:

This turn will put drivers back on the front straightaway, sending them to the right and back down Columbus Drive for a long straightaway.
