Mario Isola, crew chief for the Hasa entry made the call for Smith to come to pit road for fuel at lap 21 while the field was under caution. At lap 35, Smith would revisit pit road for fresh tires. The great pit stop allowed Smith to move into 6th at lap 39. At lap 50, Smith radioed into his crew that he had “no tack” reading and was heading in where the Hasa team went to work changing out the battery. It caused him to go two laps down and finish in 15th.
“We had over 1400 Hasa fans in the hospitality tent,” said Smith. “We were hoping to put on a better show for them.”
Smith spent some time meeting the fans and signing autographs in the Hasa Hospitality tent in turn 12. It was a record turnout of Hasa customers and employees at Portland International Raceway.
