How Did The Rookies Perform In The #NASCAR 2017 Daytona 500?
Erik Jones and Daniel Suárez took the XFINITY Series by storm in 2016

Erik Jones and Daniel Suárez took the XFINITY Series by storm in 2016 as Joe Gibbs Racing teammates. Now they're moving up to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series along with Ty Dillon in an impressive Sunoco 2017 Rookie of the Year class.

Dillon got a lot of premier series seat time in
2016 as he helped fill in for injured Tony Stewart,
drove one race for Tommy Baldwin Racing
and ran sixtimes in Leavine Family
Racing's No. 95 Chevrolet.

So far his best finish in a Monster Energy
NASCAR Cup Series event is
14th at Michigan in 2015.

20-year-old Erik Jones races for Furniture Row Racing #NASCARAs the youngest of the 2017 rookies, 20-year-old Jones will still get the "21 Means 21" flag if he wins a pole before May 30. With nine of them in the XFINITY Series to go with his four wins in 2016, that seems likely for Furniture Row Racing's newest team member and pilot of its new No. 77 Toyota entry.

Daniel Suárez is the first Latin American driver to win a #NASCAR national series event.

The 2016 XFINITY Series champion, Daniel Suárez broke through for his first victory in 2016 (soon making it three wins), becoming the first Latin American driver to win a NASCAR national series event. Next goal: First Latin American driver to win a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series event. He is racing the No. 19 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.

So how did these Sunoco ROY candidates fare in yesterday's, "Great American Race?"

Not so well:
  • 29th-Daniel Suárez / Lap 141
  • 30th-Ty Dillon / Lap 140
  • 39th-Erik Jones / Lap 103
All three had their race shortened due to an accident. They should not feel too bad, twelve non-rookies also crashed out.  It was a very tough race for all drivers.  In the 2016 Daytona 500, only four drivers were sideline due to crashes.
