Denny Hamlin’s Late Surge Sews Up Fifth Win of Season, Round of 12 Playoff Spot

 

In a race that featured a strange brew of divergent strategies, pole winner Denny Hamlin claimed his series-best fifth victory of the season and advanced to the Round of 12 of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

 

Finishing 1.620 seconds ahead of Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Chase Briscoe in front of a sellout crowd, Hamlin won Sunday’s Enjoy Illinois 300 at World Wide Technology Raceway to earn his first victory at the 1.25-mile track and 59th of his career-11th all-time and one win short of Kevin Harvick in 10th.

 

Hamlin also delivered the 200th victory for Toyota. After taking the checkered flag, the 44-year-old driver had some choice words for his detractors in the grandstands.

 

“You can either get on the bandwagon or get run over by it,” Hamlin told the crowd, generating another chorus of boos.

 

But the reality is that Hamlin announced emphatically his stature as a serious contender for the championship that has eluded him during his 20-year Cup career.

 

“Yeah, it’s so big for everyone at Toyota, Joe Gibbs Racing,” Hamlin said. “Progressive Toyota was great there at the end. So happy to get this victory. My dad’s not feeling well at home. Just shout-out to him…

 

“Fantastic day. Man, couldn’t be better.”

 

Chase Briscoe finished second; Chase Elliott placed third; Ryan Blaney came in fourth and Joey Logano completed the top five.

Connor Zilisch Pours It on at Gateway, Lands Fourth Consecutive Xfinity Series Win, Regular-Season Title

 

Connor Zilisch’s dream season continued on a track he’d never raced before.

 

Holding off the rest of the NASCAR Xfinity Series field over a succession of restarts late in Saturday night’s Nu Way 200 Sauced by Blues Hog at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, Zilisch achieved a litany of milestones with his ninth victory as a rookie and 10th career.

 

First, and perhaps most important, the 19-year-old phenom secured the Regular Season Championship and accompanying bonus of 15 playoff points, beating reigning series champion Justin Allgaier for that distinction by 53 points.

 

With four straight victories, Zilisch tied the series record for consecutive wins shared by Sam Ard (1983) and Noah Gragson (2022). His win was the 16th this year for JR Motorsports, a single-season record for the team.

 

“Four in a row, seven of the last eight, that’s awesome,” said Zilisch, who enters next week’s playoff opener at Bristol Motor Speedway with 59 playoff points. “We’re going to celebrate this — and the Regular Season Championship.

 

“Man, this is going to be tough to keep up, honestly. It’s rare that you can go on a run like this. Every week I show up thinking, ‘Man, this is going to be the weekend that we just run eighth,’ and just aren’t great, but every weekend we show up and we’re a winning race car, and my pit crew executes, my team executes, everybody does their job, and we end up doing burnouts on the frontstretch.

 

“Yeah, it’s awesome to be able to do this and win this many races.”

The twelfth race of the 2023 Truck Series season will be contested on the 1.25-mile-long track, Wide Technology Raceway (Madison, Illinois). Thirty-five drivers will compete over one hundred and sixty (160) laps in the race for a shot at victory.

 

Today’s event will be telecast live on FS1 and MRN at 12:30 pm ET. Ty Majeski will lead the field to the green.

World Wide Technology Raceway Welcomes the NASCAR Cup Series

For the first time, the NASCAR Cup Series will be visiting World Wide Technology Raceway just outside St. Louis, Illinois for the Enjoy Illinois 300 presented by TicketSmarter this Sunday, June 5 at 3:30 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

 

World Wide Technology Raceway, located in Madison, Illinois, was originally built as a road course in 1985 and was known as St. Louis International Raceway Park. The road course was demolished in 1996 to make way for the 1.25-mile paved oval and accompanying drag strip that are still there today. The facility now has more than 700 acres welcoming fans this weekend.

 

Though this will be the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series event this weekend, World Wide Technology Raceway has hosted 15 NASCAR Xfinity Series races from 1997-2010 and 21 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races from 1998-2010 and 2014-2021.

 

In total, 24 drivers entered in this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race have experience in either the NASCAR Xfinity Series or NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at World Wide Technology Raceway. Nine different drivers have won in those series at World Wide Technology Raceway, led by Kevin Harvick with three NASCAR national series wins at the 1.25-mile track (NXS 2000, 2001 and NCWTS 2010); followed by Christopher Bell (NCWTS 2016), Kyle Busch (NXS 2009), Ross Chastain (NCWTS 2019), Cole Custer (NCWTS 2015), Justin Haley (NCWTS 2018), Brad Keselowski (NXS 2010), Martin Truex Jr. (NXS 2004) and Bubba Wallace (NCWTS 2014).

 

All the action begins this weekend with practice on Friday, June 3 at 5:05 p.m. – 5:55 p.m. ET (on FS1). Then Busch Light Pole Qualifying will be held on Saturday, June 4 at 11 a.m. ET on FS1.

 

Word Wide Technology Raceway will become the fourth different track the NASCAR Cup Series has competed on in the state of Illinois with this weekend’s Enjoy Illinois 300 presented by TicketSmarter this Sunday, June 5 at 3:30 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

 

The NASCAR Cup Series first competed in the state of Illinois on Saturday, July 10, 1954 at Santa Fe Speedway, a half-mile dirt track located in Willow Springs, IL. The event had 23 cars entered and was scheduled for 200 laps (100 miles). Dick Rathman won the race driving a 1954 Hudson for car owner John Ditz.

It wasn’t until two years later that the NASCAR Cup Series returned to the state of Illinois, only this time it was at the famous Soldier Field in Chicago. On July 21, 1956, the NASCAR Cup Series saw 25 cars compete at the half-mile paved track inside the stadium for 200 laps (100 miles). The race was won by NASCAR Hall of Famer Fireball Roberts driving a Ford for car owner Pete DePaolo.

 

The NASCAR Cup Series has also competed at Chicagoland Speedway from 2001-2019 for 19 races.

 

In total, there have been 97 NASCAR national series races in the state of Illinois among five different tracks. The NASCAR Cup Series has made 21 starts in the state of Illinois

Deegan Looking to Build on Career-Best Finish at Gateway

 

Hailie Deegan started racing at the age of eight and has been the only female driver in the Lucas Oil Off Road Pro series, as well as regional series to win championships in 2013, 2015 and 2016, along with being the only youth to ever win the Lucas Oil Off Road Pro series Driver of the Year award (2016).

 

In Hailie’s first season driving in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West (now known as the ARCA West) in 2018, she scored her first win at Meridian Speedway in Idaho, and went on to capture two more checkered flags in the 2019 season making her the only female to have won races in the K&N Pro Series to date.

 

Deegan, who races for David Gilliland Racing, returns to World Wide Technology Raceway, the track where she posted her career-best NASCAR Camping World Truck Series finish (seventh-place) last season. It was the best finish by a female competitor in the series not on a superspeedway. Now, the California native returns to the 1.25-mile track looking to get her 2022 season heading in the right direction. 

 

This year, Deegan has made 10 starts this season posting five top-20 finishes and an average finish of 24.6.

 

Last year at World Wide Technology Raceway, Deegan started 19th and raced her way up to a seventh-place finish; becoming just the fourth female in series history to post a top-10 finish joining Jennifer Jo Cobb, Natalie Decker and Angela Ruch.

Richard Petty Day presented by Bommarito Automotive Group

Legendary seven-time Cup Series champion will participate in Q&A, ribbon-cutting and drive the ceremonial first laps in his 1981 Daytona 500-winning car.

 

Richard Petty – the legendary king of stock car racing – is coming to World Wide Technology Raceway to kick off the speedway’s inaugural NASCAR Cup Series weekend in style. Richard Petty Day presented by Bommarito Automotive Group will begin on Friday, June 3, at 2 p.m. with a fan Q&A followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the start-finish line. Petty then will make the ceremonial first laps on the track in his 1981 Daytona 500-winning car prior to the very first NASCAR Cup Series practice session on the 1.25-mile egg-shaped oval.

 

 

Petty rightfully earned his title of King Richard by winning seven NASCAR Cup Series championships and 200 races, including a record seven Daytona 500s. He also holds the record for most wins in one season (27) and most consecutive wins (10). The stock car superstar began racing in 1958 (at CNE Exhibition Stadium in Toronto) and retired in 1992. He was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2010.

 

The Bommarito Automotive Group will donate 4,300 June 3 tickets to charities in underserved areas in honor of Richard Petty.

 

Fans obtaining an oil change or service at Bommarito Service Centers between May 1 and May 31 will receive two complimentary tickets and free parking for Richard Petty Day presented by Bommarito Automotive Group on June 3.

 

The first 1,000 fans through the WWTR gates on June 3 will receive a Bommarito-Richard Petty souvenir.

World Wide Technology Raceway (formerly Gateway International Raceway and Gateway Motorsports Park) is a motorsport racing facility in Madison, Illinois, just east of St. Louis, Missouri, United States, close to the Gateway Arch. It features a 1.25 mi (2.01 km) oval and a 1.6-mile (2.6 km) infield road course.

 

Portland International Raceway is part of the Delta Park complex on the former site of Vanport, just south of the Columbia River. The road course is almost perfectly flat and runs clockwise. Two track configurations are possible. One includes a hard chicane at the end of the front straight and involves 12 turns a length of 1.945 mi (3.130 km). Without the chicane, the track has nine turns and a lap length of 1.915 mi (3.082 km). Portland is classified as an FIA Grade Two circuit.

Derek Kraus: 2021 NCWTS at Gateway: Race Preview

“The Gateway Arch of Glory!”

The 2021 Playoffs begin this Friday at the World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway located in Madison, Illinois. This atypic oval, created in 1997, shaped like an egg, much like Darlington, SC has done quite well so far in Derek Kraus’s .

 

Last year in his rookie season he finished the race in 13th position, his worst career result on this oval. Indeed, during his years in NASCAR K&N Pro Series, he had dominated in 2018 by winning the combined West/East race after leading almost the entire 3rd segment. The following year he got an excellent 2nd position after starting 12th. However, this 2nd position had had a bitter taste as the race had been cut off from the last 27 laps due to time constraints preventing Derek, whose car was flying on the track, to take 1st position.

 

This year, with the race in the Playoffs, Derek will only have one mission, to win it! No more calculations to do. There are seven races left before the end of the season and after poles, top10s, top5s, only one victory is missing from his CV in NCWTS.

 

And with a sponsor named "Gates Hydraulics" it would be stylish to win not far from the "Gateway Arch" of St. Louis!

 

Let's forget about Watkins Glen and focus on this race. With its banking of 11 ° in turns 1 and 2, 9 ° in turns 3 and 4 and 3 ° in the two straights. It will be necessary to make choices in the setup of the Toyota Tundra #19 NAPA Belts & Hoses / Gates Hydraulics. The first pair of turns being much tighter than the second.

 

Derek will start from 17th position. And that may be a good omen because last year Sheldon Creed  won the race just starting from 17th position!

Due to the geographic remoteness with the Cup and Xfinity races in Brooklyn, Michigan, Derek will have a new spotter in Brian Tedeschi. Originally from Custer Park, IL, he will take on this role at McAnally -Hilgemann Racing for the first time at age 25. He won't be the only new member of MHR as Andrew Diehl, 24, from Leonardtown, Maryland, was just hired by the team a few days ago (August 10). Until then he worked for JD Motorsports with Gary Keller in NXS as car chief, mechanic and even Front changer successively on cars #0, 4 and 6.

 

Among the entries are Ty Majeski and the newcomers Armani Williams and Derek Griffith. Ah yes I forgot, there will also be Josh Berry ... Hoping that the latter will avoid putting Derek in the wall as he had done in Nashville...
