JOHN THOMAS, SARASOTA, FL
John Thomas, 36, of Sarasota, Fla., joined the military in 1996, bravely touring combat zones in Bosnia Herzegovina (1996-1997) and Iraq (2003-2004).
While deployed, Thomas received many awards including the Iraqi War Metal and the Combat Infantry Badge, the most meaningful honors to him, before leaving the army as a Sergeant. After returning home, Thomas joined the Sarasota Sheriff\'s Department, where he has been a Deputy Sheriff for the past seven years and spends most of his time in the field. Thomas recognizes his mother and grandfather, who he accredits for instilling him with proper morals and values, as his heroes.
He and his wife Melissa are proud parents to their 13-month-old daughter Amelia and are dedicated racing fans, who attribute their attendance to at least one NASCAR race each year to the exciting event atmosphere.
