NASCAR Race Mom does not write about driver, Danica Patrick very much, because frankly there is usually not too many positive facts to discuss. However, I must admit that I was a tad impressed after watching her lead eleven laps during the midpoint of the Cheez-It 355.

In doing so, Danica set a record for the most laps led by a female driver in a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Patrick previously held the record with seven laps led at Talladega in 2014.

Then the #10 Nature’s Bakery Chevrolet SS team for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) persevered after a late-race accident to score a twenty-first-place finish in Sunday’s Cheez-It 355 at The Glen NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International.

The Cheez-It 355 was a wild action packed race marred by eight caution periods for twenty of the ninety laps. Seven drivers failing to finish the race around the 2.45-mile, 11-turn road course. The carnage reminded NASCAR Race Mom more of a short track than a road course.

“My Nature’s Bakery team did a good job of getting me back out there at the end, and we were able to pick up a bunch of spots,” Patrick reported. “The race didn’t go as well as we’d hoped, but we led some laps and were able to rally back at the end to get a decent finish, considering all of the damage.”

Five races remain before the Chase begins September 18 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois. While Patrick is well within the top-thirty of the point standings, it would take a win to propel her into the 2016 Chase.

Danica had a career-high finish of sixth in 2014 in Atlanta, but has not qualified for NASCAR's season-ending Chase nor ended better than twenty-fourth in the driver standings. She currently sits twenty-fourth again this season without a top ten-finish with five races left before the championship Chase. Nevertheless, the popular driver remains one of the series' most popular and marketable figures.

Before the race, Danica Patrick stopped by Wegmans in Ithaca to visit with her fans. She signed autographs, took pictures and spoke about what she hopes to accomplish this weekend at the Glen.

The next event on the Sprint Cup schedule is the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race on Saturday, August 20, at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee. The race begins at 8 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by NBCSN.
