What is not to like about Crown Royal!

Back in April, NASCAR Race Mom was lucky enough to be selected to participate in the Crown Royal “Your Name Here 500,” a NASCAR race held at the Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Virginia. The winner of the scavenger hunt for charity was to be rewarded with a trip to Las Vegas to participate in the “Race Matt” competition.

Our team did not win that scavenger hunt, however, Crown Royal announced that all nine “influencers” would be invited to Las Vegas! What is not to like about Crown Royal!

Since I was already scheduled to cover the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Award Ceremony for Insider Racing News, I had to miss the first activity – The Wranglers National Finals Rodeo.

The National Finals Rodeo, organized by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, is the premier championship rodeo event in the United States. Wrangler Jeans is the title sponsor for the 10-day event, commonly called the National Finals or NFR

The National Finals Rodeo was held at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in Paradise, Nevada. My fellow bloggers reported that they made their way to their seats just as the competition began.

The 6 events of the Rodeo were: Bareback Riding; Steer Wrestling; Team Roping; Saddle Back Riding; Tie-Down Roping; and Bull Riding.

I missed a truly exciting event and heard that the crowd cheered most for the entertainment value and strong performances, and not necessarily individual Cowboys. The riders can win more than $173,000 for winning their category and the competition was truly stiff!

Another . . . . What’s not to like about Crown Royal ---- Each time one of the Crown Royal Riders scored 90 points or more (rodeo scoring is based on a scale of 100), Crown Royal made a charitable donation of $2,000 to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. The Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund benefits cowboys and their families in the event of catastrophic injuries resulting from professional rodeo activities.

The Rodeo literally took over the MGM Grand as the 2011 NFR Headquarters. The Crown Royal Golden Buckle Zone featured live music, dancing, shows, shopping, guest appearances, drink specials, and drawings. I was truly surprised at how big the MGM was and wandered aimlessly lost on more than one occasion.

The next day was dedicated to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to race against Matt Kenseth at the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Matthew Roy Kenseth (born March 10, 1972) is a NASCAR driver. He finished fourth in the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship. I had enjoyed his speech just the night before at the Awards Ceremony.

All the bloggers boarded the bus to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday morning. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway, located approximately 15 miles from “The Strip” in Las Vegas, is a 1.5 mile tri-oval. It hosts a number of racing series including the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series. Kenseth captured the Sprint Cup Pole here in March of 2011.

Next, we amateurs signed a mountain of paperwork and releases, before the Richard Petty Driving Experience (RPE) would put us in a NASCAR race car for an adrenaline pumping thrill of a lifetime that gets you as close to being in the race as you will ever get! These programs are offered year-round with twenty tracks nationwide.

Our classroom instructor, Tony, gave us bloggers a quick crash course regarding the ins and outs of driving a NASCAR at over 100 MPH. The training included both lecture and videos. Then attired in our RPE firesuits, we nervously walked out to the track.

To report that NASCAR Race Mom was anxious would be an understatement. I was downright scared. However, I was the oldest blogger of the group and wanted to represent my generation well! (You and me Mark Martin!)

The RPE rules were simple: Obey the lights. We were coached to follow the race car ahead of us and keep up with him the best we could. If he flashed a green light – you are going too slow; if he flashed the yellow light you were going to fast; if there were no flashing lights your speed was perfect.

The Richard Petty Staff informed us that our #17 Matt Kenseth Crown Royal racecars were capable of driving about 170 miles per hour. However, we would be limited to the 130-135 range. The blogger with the fastest time would receive a $2,500 check to give to a charity: either Operation Patriot or Honoring Heroes . Really - what’s not to like about Crown Royal!

Blogger Mike Arone, who ran about 130 mph, won the challenge. However, the man to beat was Matt Kenseth. Matt put down the high speed of 168 mph, and of course out ran us all! I was not the fastest on the track, but I was not the slowest either. The experience really supplied me with an altered and more cognizant perspective as to what a real racer faces in each race. I would recommend the Richard Petty Driving experience to all NASCAR fans! It would be a great off-season activity that I would love to tackle again.

After my electrifying ten laps on the banked Las Vegas Speedway, Matt Kenseth was available for interviews. We chatted about his son, Ross. The eighteen-year-old had issues while attempting to qualify for the Snowball Derby. However, the younger Kenseth would race his way into the main event and managed a podium finish for the prestigious main event.

It did NASCAR Race Mom’s heart good to hear Matt detail how Ross had to keep his behavior in check and grades high in order to be allowed the privilege of racing. I added that we followed a similar dogma with my son Moses Smith who races in the K&N Pro Series West.

A last, what is not to like about Crown Royal; there were no losers in our group. We all had fun and additionally learned a lot about rodeos, NASCAR racing, and the good works of Crown Royal.

Other Bloggers participating in the Las Vegas event:

Capture the Crown
(Part Two)

As Matt Kenseth took the checkered flag in the Sprint Cup race on the Monster Mile, NASCAR Race Mom suddenly became highly motivated to continue her series on her Richmond International Raceway trip to attend the Crown Royal Presents the Matthew and Daniel Hansen 400.

The weekend started off rather unexpectedly. After landing at the Byrd International Airport (RIC), NRM was greeted with a signboard by my driver Warren! Now that does not happen to NASCAR Race Mom too often! Warren was very polite and efficient, as he escorted me to my hotel.

After checking into the Richmond Marriott , the entire “Capture the Crown” group drove to the Richmond International Raceway to obtain their track credentials. RIR is conveniently located in Henrico County, just outside the city of Richmond, Virginia. It is a large facility and can hold over 100,000 fans, workers and race team members. Now NASCAR Race Mom has been to numerous short tracks, especially on the West Coast. However, the enormousness and history of “America’s Premier Short Track” was not lost on me.

To finish out our day of arrival, the group vanned to the Book Binders for dinner. It was the perfect atmosphere for us bloggers to get to know our Crown Royal Hosts Zack, Jennifer, and Catlin.

The service was excellent and the manager even stopped by our table for a chat. My grilled salmon; baked potato, loaded with butter and chives; and spinach was tasty and so filling I had to forgo desert.

However, I did have a responsible nightcap (Crown Over Crushed Ice) before retiring to my hotel room. The anticipation made it difficult for me to fall asleep, but I knew that NASCAR Race Mom would need her rest for the thrilling day ahead. The Crown Royal Presents the Matthew and Daniel Hansen 400 promised to be fun-filled and exhilarating!

Before signing off, NASCAR Race Mom cannot pass up this opportunity to congratulate NASCAR Driver Matt Kenseth, his sponsor Crown Royal and the entire #17 team on their second win in the last five races, and their sixth place standing in the championship points. Could this be the year that Matt and Crown Royal win the championship? It is going to be an extraordinary 2011 NASCAR Season.

Remember you can follow Matt on twitter and on Facebook .

Capture the Crown
NASCAR Race Mom at RIR

Sitting in front of my computer, in my quiet office, wearing my freshly laundered purple camo Crown Royal T-Shirt; I have come to the certainty that my weekend at the “America’s Premier Short Track” in Richmond, Virginia has supplied me with a mountainous amount of material for my blog. Therefore rather than blast my audience with precipitous facts, my participation in “Crown Royal Presents the Matthew and Daniel Hansen 400” will be covered in a mini-series of posts.

For those of you less familiar with me, my name is “z.” - better known as NASCAR Race Mom. For fourteen weekends of the racing season, you can locate me at a track participating in the K&N Pro Series West. This series serves as NASCAR's top developmental series and encompasses NASCAR's oldest stock car series in the West, which dates back to 1954. It runs on a challenging combination of speedways, short tracks and road courses, and the series has made its mark throughout the years with tough competition and exciting racing.

My oldest son races in this series and yes, I am the typical proud momma. Moses Smith, the #16 Hasa Pool Products / NAPA Gold Filters Toyota was recently voted the Most Popular Driver for the third year in a row. He finished the 2010 season in fourth place and after three races is in second place for the 2011 season.

Crown Royal’s “Capture the Crown” media event, was my first visit to the Richmond International Raceway. NRM learned that this short track has a RESPECT theme that is an awareness initiative to promote a first-class and safe atmosphere. NASCAR Race Mom was impressed at its simplicity yet effectiveness. The track emphasizes that the race fans:

  1. Be respectful of everyone;

  2. Be a good neighbor;

  3. Be responsible;

  4. Be attentive;

  5. Take pride and

  6. Have fun.

This makes a perfect conduit into my Crown Royal racing weekend. NASCAR Race Mom found Crown Royal to be a perfect business model for the RESPECT theme. As the number one selling Canadian Whisky brand in the US by value, Crown Royal has a tradition as long and distinctive as its taste.

As I savored my Crown Royal at the track, I was consistently reminded how Crown Royal takes pride in their product and of their attentiveness to detail. Quoting one of my Crown Royal Hosts, “We at Crown Royal want to encourage people to drink responsibly. We have always represented quality over quantity, and we want to get that message across to fans of NASCAR.” Their motto of “Please Drink Responsibly” was displayed below every official race logo.

Lastly, as my next in this series of posts will witness; NASCAR Race Mom had a very fun time at the “Crown Royal Presents the Matthew and Daniel Hansen 400.”

My Hometown Hero
Army Spc. James Beckstrand

Army Spc. James "Jimmy" Beckstrand

Matthew and Daniel Hansen are the grand-prize winners of the Crown Royal “Your Name Here” contest. Matthew and Daniel joined the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) in 2002.

Due to injury, Matthew who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, now works at a military base in San Marcos, near to my hometown. He hopes to return overseas again on duty. Daniel was selected to protect President George W. Bush at Camp David in 2004 and later Lieutenant General Richard C. Zilmer, USMC while in Iraq, before falling victim to a roadside bomb supporting combat operations in the Farah province of Afghanistan on February 14, 2009.

As I ready myself for my adventure to Richmond for that special Sprint Cup Race, the story of twin brothers Matthew and Daniel Hansen brings to mind three other young men from San Diego’s North County.

Jimmy Lee Beckstrand was an audacious preteen in the late eighties, a year younger than my oldest son Moses and a year older than my youngest Zachariah. I remember the laughter as the three bounded through the doors looking for a drink of water after playing outside in the cul-de-sac for as long as they could under the warm California sun.

I have to laugh as I recall the night Jimmy and Zack spent the night in a makeshift tent they had pitched in our backyard grass. My husband Paul, waited till after midnight and after their giggly noise faded to creep outside and pretend to be a bear to scare them.

After high school, the three childhood chums set out to make their mark in the world in their own unique way. A few years later, I spotted Jimmy walking uphill towards his father’s house, dressed in his uniform. As I ran outside to say “hi,” I could not contain my awe and surprise. Jimmy Lee looked great and held himself with extreme confidence. I joked that his beloved roller blades would not be an acceptable fashion accessory for his current look.

That was the last time I spoke to Army Spc. James "Jimmy" Beckstrand. On April 29, 2004, during a four-month extension of duty, Jimmy and seven other soldiers from his unit, the 27th Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Armored Division out of Baumholder, Germany, were killed when their convoy was attacked and a car bomb exploded near them. Jimmy Lee was just twenty-seven years old and a newlywed. He earned a Purple Heart medal for wounds received in action, and a Bronze Star medal for meritorious service and for his ultimate sacrifice.

Therefore, as I fly to Richmond, this April 29th to honor Matthew and Daniel Hansen for their service and sacrifice, I have mixed emotions. I am excited to be attending the Sprint Cup race at the Richmond International Raceway. I am also pensive as I commemorate the seventh anniversary of our hometown hero’s death. Most of all, however, NASCAR Race Mom is extremely grateful to both Crown Royal and NASCAR for giving America this opportunity to remember and honor the expense our military families pay to protect our rights and freedoms.

‘Capture the Crown’ is a two-day-event to be held at the Richmond International Raceway during the Crown Royal “Your Name Here” 400. The program will features nine online ‘influencers’ competing in team play in a Scavenger Hunt to accomplish tasks for points. The team with the highest number of points at the end of the race will be named the winner.

The winning team will be invited to travel to Las Vegas, Nevada from November 28-30, 2011 for the “Crown Royal Race Matt” program. They will also receive a charity donation made in their name to a charity of their choice!

Thanks to an astonishing invitation from Crown Royal, NASCAR Race Mom is eagerly looking forward to participating in the ‘Capture the Crown’ event this weekend. (Expenses for this trip are provided by Diageo, the parent company of Crown Royal.)

The Scavenger Hunt will require me to speak with and photograph, contest winner, Matthew Hansen; Sprint Cup Driver, Matt Kenseth; Country Western Star, Rodney Atkins; The Crown Royal Master of Whiskey and Lieutenant General Richard C. Zilmer, of the U.S. Marine Corps. ‘Capture the Crown’ activities will include a Rodney Atkin's concert, pace car rides and whisky tasting.

Having watched my son Moses race in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West circuit for the last five years, NASCAR Race Mom has come to appreciate the fast paced action of short track racing. The opportunity to attend the “Crown Royal Presents The Matthew and Daniel Hansen 400” is like a dream come true. I have heard that RIR is the ideal blend of short track and intermediate speedway due to its high-speed corners and banked front-stretch.

NASCAR Race Mom will be blogging, facebooking, and tweeting as much as possible during the ‘Capture the Crown’ weekend. Please root for my team as we hunt for enough points to win the competition and win a trip to the November 28-30, 2011 for the “Crown Royal Race Matt” program.

Crown Royal Presents
The Matthew and Daniel Hansen 400

Matthew and Daniel Hansen

This weekend at Richmond International Raceway, the names of two siblings will be on the tip of every tongue in the NASCAR garage: Matthew and Daniel Hansen, U.S. Marine twins and grand-prize winners of the Crown Royal “Your Name Here” contest. The contest awarded them with naming rights to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Saturday, April 30, officially titled, “Crown Royal Presents The Matthew and Daniel Hansen 400.”

Traditionally, the race has donned only the name of the contest winner, but this year’s race will recognize Matthew, as well as his identical twin brother and fellow Marine, Daniel, who was killed in action on Feb. 14, 2009. Matthew Hansen was unveiled as the grand-prize winner earlier this year during a ceremony led by country music star Rodney Atkins at Daytona International Speedway. Atkins performed his hit song “These are My People” during an acoustic set and added the Hansen brothers’ names to the lyrics signifying their selection as winners.

Matthew Hansen lives in San Marcos, Calif., and was chosen from a group of five military finalists who were all nominated by their friends and family for their ability to demonstrate the core values of the military in performing a selfless act that made them a hero. Matthew’s godmother nominated him for amazing service during three deployments to Iraq and for continuing to serve with amazing courage and faith after losing his twin brother and best friend.

“I think it’s a really cool thing that Crown Royal does to probably make all of us, the fans and anybody who thinks about why the race is named that, realize what military families sacrifice. We can talk about it and you can see the wars on TV, but unless you really know somebody or hear somebody’s story to see how it really affects them, you probably don’t realize the magnitude of what they do and the suffering and what they all go through as when you get to know them. So I’m looking forward to spending a week with him down in Richmond and getting to know them a little better.” (Matt Kenseth #17 - 2011 NSCS Aaron’s 499 Q & A with the Ford Racing Driver before the 2011 NSCS Aaron’s 499- 04/16/2011)

Thanks to a generous invitation from Crown Royal, I am eagerly looking forward to attending the “Crown Royal Presents The Matthew and Daniel Hansen 400” and the opportunity to meet the 2011 Grand Prize Winner. It will be my honor to shake Matthew’s hand and thank him for his and his families’ sacrifices for our freedoms. We are so grateful for the dedication and courage displayed all our military families.

My plan is to share my adventure through photographs, blog posts; and via facebook and twitter. Please feel free to send me a facebook request by clicking here and/or following me on twitter by clicking here.

Stay tuned - I will be sharing my itinerary soon.
