Front Row Motorsports Adds Third Team for 2019, Signs Matt Tifft to Drive No. 36

Front Row Motorsports Adds Third Team for 2019, Signs Matt Tifft to Drive No. 36

Veterans McDowell and Ragan to Return in Nos. 34 and 38

Front Row Motorsports Adds Third Team for 2019, Signs Matt Tifft to Drive No. 36

Bob Jenkins will expand his Front Row Motorsports team in 2019, signing Matt Tifft to drive a third Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series entry, the No. 36 Ford Mustang. Veterans Michael McDowell and David Ragan will return to drive the Nos. 34 and 38 Ford Mustangs and mentor the 22-year-old Tifft in his Cup series rookie season.

Tifft finished sixth in the NASCAR XFINITY Series championship this season, earning six top-five and 19 top-10 finishes in his 2018 campaign with Richard Childress Racing, making it to the Round of 8 in the series playoffs. In four XFINITY series seasons, the young driver has nine top-five and 38 top-10 finishes, and two poles.

“Today is a huge moment in my career, announcing my move to the Cup series,” said Tifft. “This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid, and I can’t believe it’s finally coming true.

“I’m so thankful to Front Row Motorsports for giving me the opportunity to drive the No. 36 next season. I’m looking forward to guidance from veterans Michael McDowell and David Ragan and am ready to take on the challenge of driving with 39 of the best drivers in the world.”

McDowell will return to the No. 34 in 2019 after completing his first full season with Front Row Motorsports. The 11-year Cup series veteran earned a top-10, 2-top-15 and 10 top-20 finishes in 2018 and averaged a starting position of 23rd – the best qualifying average in Front Row team history.

Next season will be Ragan’s sixth with Jenkins’ team. The 12-year Cup series veteran earned a top-10, four top-15 and 14 top-20 finishes in 2018. Ragan made Front Row Motorsports history in 2013 when he earned the team its first victory with a last-lap dash to the front at Talladega Superspeedway.

The 2018 season was the first for McDowell and Ragan as teammates.

“This season has been a big stepping-stone for me in my career,” McDowell said. “We haven’t gotten the results we’ve wanted every week, but we’ve made huge advances as a team. I’ve really benefited from having a teammate this year and feel like I’ve made valuable contributions in return. I’m looking forward to building on that next year and welcoming another teammate in Matt Tifft.”

“Bob Jenkins has always grown his race team strategically, and I’m proud to be a part of that growth,” said Ragan. “It’s exciting that we’re now ready to take the next step with a third car in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. We’ve made a lot of gains this season with our enhanced program with Ford Performance and our alliance with Roush Fenway Racing, and I think we can make even greater strides next year.”

Front Row Motorsports has competed full-time in NASCAR’s premier series since 2009. In that time, countless other race teams have started up and folded. Jenkins is proud of the strategic, steady growth of his team over the past 10 seasons.

“We’ve made it clear in recent years that it was our intent to continue to invest in NASCAR and expand to a three-car team,” Jenkins said. “Not only are we here to stay, we’re here to grow.

“We already have two proven veterans in our line-up, and now we’ll get to add an impressive young talent and championship contender who will inject some new energy into the group. With the introduction of the Ford Mustang into the Cup Series, 2019 is shaping up to be an exciting season for us.”

Sponsor partnerships and crew chief pairings will be announced at later dates.

Sadler, Bell, Tifft and Cindric Battle for the $100,000 Bonus

Round Three of the Dash 4 Cash – Talladega #NASCAR

For the first time in the program’s history, the NASCAR Xfinity Series Dash 4 Cash is going to Talladega Superspeedway.

Elliott Sadler, the top Dash 4 Cash-eligible finishing driver, won the $100,000 prize at Richmond and advanced to a have a shot at the prize at Talladega along with the three-highest finishing series regulars, Christopher Bell, Matt Tifft and Austin Cindric.

Christopher Bell won the race; Elliott Sadler finished in third; Matt Tifft finished fourth and Austin Cindric posted a series career best fifth.

  • P13 - Christopher Bell
*Note Elliott Sadler will start from the rear due to engine change.

Christopher Bell
Sadler’s experience gives him a slight advantage over Christopher Bell, who will be making his series track debut at Talladega Superspeedway this weekend. Though it will be his first series start, Bell does have some experience at Talladega. He has made three NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts at the 2.66-mile facility posting one pole and an average finish of 7.0; including a runner-up finish last season.

Matt Tifft - Round Three of the Dash 4 Cash – #NASCAR
Matt Tifft
Another driver looking for his own big check is Richard Childress Racing’s Matt Tifft. The Hinckley, Ohio, native has made two series starts at Talladega, posting an average finish of 7.0 – his best average finish on a track where he has made multiple starts.

And last but not least, is Team Penske’s Austin Cindric. Like Bell, Cindric will also be making his series track debut this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway, but has also made two NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts at the historic facility, posting a best finish of fifth last season.

In addition to the $100,000 awarded to each Dash 4 Cash winner, Comcast will also donate a total of $40,000 to local organizations within race markets on behalf of the Internet Essentials program, the nation’s largest program for getting low-income households online, having connected 4 million low-income Americans since 2011.

Comcast's $10,000 Internet Essentials donation during each race weekend will go to:
  • Bristol: Quest Foundation for Washington County Schools
  • Richmond: Code Virginia, which partners with local schools to encourage computer science education
  • Talladega: Boys and Girls Club of Gadsden and Etowah County

Ryan Preece took home the first $100,000 bonus this season at Bristol Motor Speedway and then Elliott Sadler grabbed the second monster check at Richmond last weekend.

Now Sadler has a chance to make it two Dash 4 Cash bonuses in a row if he can win it again this weekend at Talladega. Sadler has made nine series starts at Talladega, posting two wins (2014, 2016), four top fives, six top 10s and an average finish of 10.4.

The top Dash 4 Cash-eligible finishing driver wins the $100,000 prize at Talladega and will advance to a have a shot at the prize at Dover (the last race in the 2018 Dash 4 Cash program) along with the three-highest finishing series regulars.

Matt Tifft Finishes Fourth At Richmond

Coming off his first top-five finish of the season, Matt Tifft qualified for the third round of Xfinity’s Dash 4 Cash program when he placed fourth at Richmond Raceway last Friday night. This is Tifft’s first time qualifying for the program, in which he now has a shot at earning a $100,000 bonus if he is the highest finisher of the four participants after Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.

“I feel like that in qualifying for Dash 4 Cash with our fourth-place finish from Richmond, we showed that we really earned it,” said Tifft. “We hadn’t been able to put together a complete race weekend like we had at Richmond this year, where we earned stage points and a solid finish, so accomplishing that this past weekend really set us up to be able to qualify for this round of Dash 4 Cash.

“It’s almost like it’s a nice added bonus to be able to go after it this weekend at Talladega,” he said. “We were able to accomplish all our goals at Richmond, so now we get to go compete for an extra $100,000 thanks to Xfinity.”

“As far as the race goes, I don’t see making the Dash 4 Cash really affecting our strategy or efforts,” Tifft said. “We’ve talked about some situations we may be in during the race and what to do in each one. For me personally, I’d like to focus on trying to stay in the front of the pack during the race. Every time I’ve dropped back in one of these races, it seems to get pretty ugly.

“I’ve been to Talladega a few times more than I’ve been to Daytona so I’m a little more comfortable there with how wide that place is,” he said. “I feel more confident going there this time since we’ve been running well lately. It’s not like a make-or-break weekend for us.”

The Xfinity Series Hits the Track on Saturday, April 28 at 3 p.m. E.T.

Xfinity Series Youth Movement Continues In 2018

Xfinity Series Youth Movement Continues In 2018 In recent years, the NASCAR Xfinity Series has been a big stage for up-and-coming young stars in NASCAR to show off their talents, and this season is no different.

Through the first five races, the top 10 in driver points is besieged with youngsters looking to make a name for themselves, so much so, the average age of the series’ top 10 following Auto Club Speedway is a youthful 26.0.

Eight of the top 10 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship driver standings are in their 20s; with the youngest being Cole Custer at the age of 20. The two elders of the group are Elliott Sadler at the age of 42 and Justin Allgaier at 31.

Cole Custer - Pit Stop #NASCAR

To put in perspective how young some of these drivers are, current standings leader Elliott Sadler is twice the age of three of his top-10 competitors - Cole Custer (20), Brandon Jones (21) and Matt Tifft (21).

The NASCAR Xfinity Series returns to action next week on April 7 at Texas Motor Speedway for the My Bariatric Solutions 300. Erik Jones swept the NASCAR Xfinity Series races at Texas Motor Speedway last season.

Five Things You Didn’t Know About Matt Tifft

Five Things You Didn’t Know About Matt Tifft
Five Things You Didn’t Know About Matt Tifft (#NASCAR)

Matt Tifft, twenty-one years old, is joining the Richard Childress Racing #NASCAR XFINITY Series program to pilot the No. 2 Chevrolet Camaro for the 2018 season. With Tifft new to the RCR driver lineup, here are five things you may not know about him.

Matt’s from Northeast Ohio and loves Cleveland sports teams

Tifft grew up in Hinckley, Ohio, a town of approximately 3,000 people just a little bit south of Cleveland. Tifft grew up racing go-karts and super late models on both dirt and asphalt tracks around the northeast Ohio area before moving up to the ARCA Midwest Tour. His Ohio roots also make him a Cleveland sports fan, rooting for the Cavaliers, Indians and Browns.

He’s a brain tumor survivor and awareness activist

In 2016, Tifft was sidelined from racing after it was discovered he has a low-grade brain tumor that needed to be removed. After making an extraordinary recovery, he was back to racing 11 weeks later. Tifft now acts as a spokesperson for the American Brain Tumor Association and helps the non-profit promote brain tumor awareness through events and lobby for federal funding for research and awareness campaigns.

Tiff loves Rock and Roll!

Growing up relatively close to the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio and it influenced Tifft’s music preferences. Tifft loves rock and roll and some of his favorites include Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, and the Artic Monkeys.

He’s currently participating in the Keto diet

Since his brain tumor surgery, Tifft has turned to the Keto diet, a low-carb diet, that helps with different areas of his health. He recently has gotten into trying out new Keto recipes at home and following a podcast called Keto for Normies.

“After doing some research, I went on the Keto diet to help with my overall brain health,” said Tifft. “I knew it was a lot healthier for your brain and your overall body to be fueled by fat rather than sugar. That is the opposite of what you would think, but it actually works. I eat mainly meat and cheeses, which are really high in fat. Once you start the Keto diet your body adapts and you actually lose a bunch of fat. It provides you with a sustainable energy source and it’s almost like an alternate fuel for my body and mind.”

He’s working on improving his Mandarin

In high school, Matt was required to take a foreign language class. The class offerings for Spanish were full so he ended up in a Chinese language class and learned Mandarin instead. Though he’s not fluent, Matt keeps up with the language and has a strong vocabulary.

Tifft to Run Full #NASCAR XFINITY Series Season in 2017

Tifft to Run Full #NASCAR XFINITY Series Season in 2017
Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) announces today Ohio-native Matt Tifft will pilot a Toyota Camry full-time in 2017, across all 33 races of the NASCAR XFINITY Series. The 20-year old rookie, a part-time driver currently in the Joe Gibbs Racing stable, who accomplished his first top-five result and first pole-qualifying run in only nine races in 2016, has now earned a larger opportunity to compete in NASCAR’s XFINIY series, appropriately themed “Names are Made Here.”

Tifft to Run Full #NASCAR XFINITY Series Season in 2017

Tifft has run a limited schedule in both the XFINITY Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series over the last three seasons, making a combined 31-career starts. In these early stages of his career Tifft has recorded one top-five and eight top-10 finishing spots in the Camping World Tuck Series and one top-five, five top-10 finishes and a pole-qualifying position in the XFINITY Series. Tifft has also recorded time in NASCAR’s K&N Pro West, K&N Pro East and ARCA Series and the X-1R Pro Cup Series.

Tifft made his first career XFNITY Series start and first entry with JGR at Kentucky Speedway in 2015 earning an impressive 10th-place finish in his debut.

His racing career would take a detour in 2016 when in June of this year a low-grade glioma in his brain was discovered during routine evaluations for some back pain. In July the young driver had surgery to remove the benign tumor and began rehabilitation. By August the strong rookie was working his way back to driving a consumer vehicle and in September he returned to NASCAR competition with the Camping World Truck Series race at Chicagoland (Ill.) Speedway. One week later he was back with JGR in the XFINITY Series at Kentucky Speedway, ironically the same track where he accomplished his initial series start. Tifft’s fast return from brain surgery to on-track racing yielded 12th place and fifth-place results respectively. The Kentucky run was Tifft’s first top-five finish of his young XFINITY Series career.

“It has been an incredible year and I am honored to have the opportunity to continue working with Joe Gibbs Racing in the 2017 season. I’ve always wanted the chance to contend for a championship with the Chase for the Championship program, I am thrilled to be with JGR and know they will be instrumental in my career. Through my health challenges this year and while I have continued to learn and improve my driving skills, Coach Gibbs, the staff, and veteran drivers here have mentored me and I look forward to the opportunity to be around them now for a full season,” remarked an appreciative Tifft.

In addition, JGR announces that Matt Beckman will serve as crew chief for Tifft and team in 2017. Beckman currently serves as the race engineer under crew chief Mike Wheeler with the No. 11 Sprint Cup Series Toyota team. Beckman joined JGR in 2007 as an engineer with the race team support group and was promoted to manager of the group in 2014 before becoming race engineer on the No. 19 Sprint Cup Series Toyota team in 2015. He holds an undergraduate degree from Michigan Tech and earned his master’s degree from the University of Minnesota.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for me and I’m excited to work with Matt (Tifft),” said Beckman. “Joe Gibbs Racing has had incredible success for many years now in the XFINITY Series and I know the organization takes immense pride in those accomplishments. You don’t have to look any further than JGR’s Cup Series crew chief lineup to realize the tradition they established at JGR and I’m honored to become a part of it starting next season.”

Tifft’s 2016 XFINITY Series schedule afforded him the opportunity to compete in eight races to date, which yielded one top-five, four top-10 finishes, a first pole capture and 23 laps led. The rookie has two scheduled races remaining on the 2016 XFINITY Series schedule, this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth and in two weeks at the season-ending Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway.

Tifft further described next year’s opportunity, “I am very excited to work with a new crew chief and look forward to building on my race experience alongside Matt (Beckman). I know I have two more races to finish this year, but 2017 is right around the corner, and I can’t wait to get started in Daytona!”

JGR has history of developing young drivers with Erik Jones and Daniel Suarez most recently achieving success in their program.

“We look forward to continued development with Matt (Tifft) over this next race season,” said Executive Vice President of XFINITY Series Operations and Development Steve DeSouza. “He’s shown strength through adversity and a strong willingness to advance his performance level for a long-term career in racing. JGR has enjoyed watching young drivers such as Erik (Jones) and Daniel (Suarez) move through our system and build experience that is yielding them positive results on the racetrack. With the championship caliber NASCAR Sprint Cup Series programs, drivers and personnel to draw from here, these young competitors continue to grow. I know Matt will take full advantage of this continued opportunity.”

When he’s not improving his race skills to become a veteran NASCAR driver, Tifft is also a second-year student at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, as a business management major.

Primary sponsorship across the 33 designated races with Tifft and the assigned car number will be further developed and announced at a later date.

Tifft Returned to #NASCAR Camping World Truck Series

Returns To Racing Eleven Weeks After Brain Surgery

Matt Tifft returned to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on Friday in the No. 32 Red Horse Racing Toyota after a 10-week hiatus while recovering from brain surgery. The NASCAR Next member tested at Hickory Motor Speedway on Monday and has been sharpening his skills with a race simulator.

Tifft Returned to #NASCAR Camping World Truck Series

Nineteen-year-old Tifft recorded a twelfth-place finish in the American Ethanol E15 225 after starting eleventh on the grid. Not bad for his first race back since undergoing brain surgery on July 1 to remove a grade two Diffuse Astrocytoma or Glioma in his brain.

"Going the high speeds and going into the banking of a track like Chicagoland in a Truck Series event, it's totally different than what you can prepare for on a short track. A lot of fun but also I had to be on my game just like any other driver has to be. It takes a lap or two for you to get used to it and I think by the second run out there we were running competitive times again. Tifft stated before the race. But, definitely, was soaking it in going around the first couple of laps."

Matt Tifft is a college student and race car driver from Hinckley, Ohio. He currently attends UNC-Charlotte as a business major. He has followed racing for most of his life and is a devoted race fan, especially of NASCAR. He grew up attending many dirt late model stock car races with his father’s team, primarily in Michigan.
