#NASCARs K&N Pro Series East Kicked Off the 2018 season in New Smyrna

Two K&N Pro Series Champions Battle Aggressively for the Win

The #NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Opener's exciting finish.

The K&N Pro Series started their 2018 #NASCAR season in New Smyrna, Florida last weekend with the New Smyrna 175.

Tyler Dippel, a NASCAR Next alum posted the fastest overall time in practice for the season-opening with time of 18.701 seconds (92.401 mph) in the final practice behind the wheel of the No. 30 TyCar Ford for Rette Jones Racing.

Huntersville, North Carolina’s Harrison Burton won his third career NASCAR K&N Pro Series East pole award on Sunday. The defending series champion drove his No. 12 DEX Imaging Toyota to a fast lap of 18.428 seconds/93.770 mph.

However, in the eventful and exciting conclusion, Todd Gilliland emerged with the victory by diving under Burton for the lead on the white flag lap and winning the drag race down the back stretch.

“Hard racing for the win,” Gilliland said of the battle. “That stuff is going to happen. We were both very hungry to get the win.”

Burton, led 79 laps, lost the top spot on Lap 131. But with two to go, he used a bump-and-run into Turn 3 to take the lead back. Gilliland, though, muscled his way by less than a half-lap later.

The victory was Todd’s sixth career in the East Series and was his 19th victory combined in the K&N Pro Series.

“Luckily we put this Toyota Camry in Victory Lane.” said Gilliland, who will be running a split schedule between the K&N Pro Series and Camping World Truck Series after winning the last two K&N Pro West titles. “I can’t thank everyone on my team enough. It’s a dream come true to be back here.”

“We were saving gas from the beginning of the race,” Burton said. “At the end of the race, you aren’t think about it when you are racing like that, but I’m sure we were pretty close. It was just two guys going hard for the win, that’s what we come to do, we are both racing for the W.”

Fans were able to watch the racing action through a live stream on FansChoice.TV. Additionally, the race will air on NBCSN on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East returns to the track on April 14 at Bristol Motor Speedway for the Zombie Auto 150.

Dipple to Return To #KNEast with RJR

Tyler Finished His 2016 #KNEast Season 3nd in the Points

Wallkill, New York native Tyler Dippel, a current member of the 2016-2017 NASCAR Next program will join Rette Jones Racing (RJR) as driver of the No. 28 D and A Concrete Contractor / TYCAR Trenchless Technologies Ford Fusion next season, alongside sophomore driver Dominique Van Wieringen who also will return for a full-time slate in the No. 30 Durobyte Ford Fusion.

Dippel joins RJR after a rookie season on the K&N East tour driving for HScott Motorsports with Justin Marks. After earning an eighth-place finish in his series debut at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway this past February, Dippel won his first K&N event in just his second series start at Mobile International Speedway in March, leading a dominating 124 of the event’s 154 laps. Dippel ended his freshman season third in points with one top-five and eight top-10 finishes.

Motorsports veteran Rich Lushes recently joined the team and will serve as crew chief for Dippel.

“I’m super excited for the opportunity to drive for Rette Jones Racing for the 2017 season,” said Dippel. “I think 2017 will be great joining forces with Mark (Rette), Terry (Jones) and Rich (Lushes). They’re all super smart guys and will bring a stout car to the race track every week.

“I’m really looking forward to being a part of the RJR family and getting ourselves off to a strong start.”

Dippel, sixteen, will enter his sophomore season following a year of big block modified competition in 2015, where he became the youngest winner in the northeast area, while also earning Rookie of the Year honors in the DIRTcar Northeast Series. Dippel began his racing career at the age of seven, racing slingshot race cars, considered scaled down versions of dirt modifieds.

Dippel made his first full-size stock car start on asphalt in 2014. In 2015, he held the PASS Super Late Model national points lead throughout the season until the season finale, when a mechanical failure ended his race early. Additionally, he made three starts in the ARCA Racing Series, with a career-best of fourth at the tough Salem (Ind.) Speedway in Sept. driving for Lira Motorsports.

“It means so much that I’ll have another opportunity to compete for a championship,” sounded Dippel. “I know there is so much I could do better coming into my second year and with a great team behind me, I’m hungry and have something to prove. I believe that we can win multiple races and go for a championship. I can’t wait to get started.”
