Shane van Gisbergen Triumphs in Inaugural Cup Series Race in Mexico City

 

An overcast sky and early afternoon drizzle could not dampen the enthusiasm or energy of the huge crowd at Mexico City’s Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez Sunday for the first points-paying NASCAR Cup Series race outside the United States in half a century.

 

And they were not disappointed.

 

As he did at another NASCAR “inaugural race” — on the streets of Chicago two years ago in his national series debut — New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen, 36, prevailed again. This time, driving the No. 88 Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing, he claimed a huge 16.567-second victory over Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell in the Viva Mexico 250 – the largest margin of victory in the Cup Series since Texas in November 2009.

 

The three-time Australian Supercars champion van Gisbergen — in his first full-time season at the NASCAR Cup Series level — won pole position and led 60 of the race’s 100 laps, including the final 32, easily pulling away from the field to claim his first ever provisional berth in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs with the win. He extended his margin of victory by nearly a second in each of the final five laps.

 

“What a week. I’ve really enjoyed myself here, but felt like rubbish this morning,” said van Gisbergen, whose victory was only his second top-10 finish of the season.

 

“Our car was amazing,” he added. “The 54 [Ty Gibbs] was close, but that last stint, what a pleasure, just ripping lap after lap and watching them get smaller in the mirror.”

Daniel Suárez Scores Massive Xfinity Series Win at Home in Mexico City

 

In all his high hopes and hard work over the last year to promote NASCAR’s return to his home country of Mexico, even Daniel Suárez could not have imagined the amazing story of his dramatic win in Saturday’s The Chilango 150 — coming from last place on the grid in a backup car and charging to Victory Lane.

 

After victory spinouts, the 33-year-old native from Monterrey, Mexico climbed out of his No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, stood on the car’s roof, pounded his chest and pointed upward to the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez grandstands — shouting to the thrilled crowd in his native Spanish and thanking his loyal fans for their support.

 

“It’s everything I was looking for, just a special day,” said an emotional Suárez, the 2016 Xfinity Series champion, who led a race-best 19 of the race’s 65 laps and beat Taylor Gray to the checkered flag by .598 seconds in a backup car the team rebuilt after he crashed in the morning qualifying session.

 

“It’s a very special day, very, very special to be here in front of my people, all these people that have supported me for many, many years and known me since my NASCAR Mexico days, now I’m fighting with the big boys,” said Suárez who was forced to use the “international provisional” starting position after his incident in qualifying.

Treyten Lapcevich Secures Dominant First ARCA Menards Series Victory at Berlin

 

When the 2025 season began for Treyten Lapcevich, he knew it was important to capitalize on every available opportunity.

 

A third-place showing for the Canadian driver at Phoenix Raceway earlier this year reinforced his belief that he could excel in the United States. The ride with Venturini Motorsports that evening was only for one race, which left Lapcevich waiting for the next moment to showcase his talent in the ARCA Menards Series. 

 

Nitro Motorsports provided Lapcevich with a chance in Saturday’s Berlin ARCA 200 at Berlin Raceway, one he didn’t let go to waste. Leading every lap from the pole, Lapcevich faced minimal opposition from the field and easily cruised to Victory Lane in his second ARCA Menards Series appearance.

 

“I don’t even know what to say,” Lapcevich said. “A big thanks to Nitro Motorsports. [My crew chief] Shannon [Rusch] and the guys had this thing hooked up. I haven’t been in the seat a whole lot this year and these guys came together and made this possible for me. A huge thanks to Nitro for truly giving me a rocket ship.”

Chris Buescher wards off Truex, goes back-to-back with victory at Michigan

 

After rain forced this Monday race; in an extended, dramatic, nail-biting green-flag run to the finish, Chris Buescher held off hard-charging Martin Truex Jr. to win his second straight Cup Series race. With team co-owner Brad Keselowski finishing fourth and Buescher winning – the ninth straight victory for Ford drivers at the 2-mile speedway – RFK can claim bragging rights as the top Ford team in the Cup garage, at least for now.

 

“This Castrol Mustang was so good in practice, qualifying,” said Buescher, who picked up his fourth career victory. “Gave me a great car again. Had to work for that one, too, hard racing at the end.

 

“Martin was very clean with me. I appreciate that. Get to go to Victory Lane two weeks in a row. That’s pretty awesome.”

John Hunter Nemechek prevails at Michigan, lands JGR’s 200th Xfinity win

 

Overcoming an early wreck, a late caution and an angry teammate (Ty Gibbs), John Hunter Nemechek claimed a milestone victory in Saturday’s Cabo Wabo 250 at Michigan International Speedway.

 

The NASCAR Xfinity win was the 200th in the series for Joe Gibbs Racing. For Nemechek, it was the fifth victory of the season and the seventh of his career – all at different tracks.

 

With all the success Nemechek has had this year and with seven career wins in the Xfinity Series, there is growing interest in what his plans are next year perhaps as a Cup driver.

 

“I'm 100% focused on this year and trying to win the Xfinity championship,” he said. “I don’t know what my plans are for ’24. I have no clue.”

 

With the victory, Nemechek gained a tie with Austin Hill for the series points lead. Nemechek owns the potential tiebreaker with five victories to Hill’s four.

With the 2023 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Playoff field set, the series took a week off from competition.

 

The playoffs will consist of three rounds, starting with the Round of 10 before continuing with the Round of 8 and concluding with the Championship 4. The Round of 10 consists of races at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, the Milwaukee Mile and Kansas Speedway, while the Round of 8 will occur at Bristol Motor Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway. The Championship 4 race will be held at Phoenix Raceway.

Jesse Love battles exhaustion, rivals to claim an impressive win

 

Jesse Love entered Friday’s ‘Henry Ford Health 200’ having won five races in 2023, easily the most in the ARCA Menards Series this year.

 

The ARCA championship points leader’s sixth victory came in arguably the most chaotic — and, in his case, exhausting — event of the season.

 

“Just a lot of good guys around us,” a spent Love said, referring to his Venturini team. “Lost our cool suit, lost the helmet blower, feet blower went out from the heat you get. Just everything.

 

“I feel like I’m in pretty good shape. I go on runs with my dog Buck every day. … But I’m definitely worn out.”

Kyle Busch Makes It an SRX Two-for-Two

 

#NASCAR Star, KyleBusch dominated again for the second consecutive SRX race in as many starts on Thursday night at Berlin Raceway, just outside Grand Rapids, Michigan, adding to his triumph last week at Motor Mile Speedway in Virginia.

 

“Just being here before, knowing what to expect, all that sort of stuff,” Busch said after taking the checkered flag at a track he’s appeared several times in other events, including prior Late Model races.

 

“I thought about restarting in fourth (in the final restart of the race, late in the event) and I thought, ‘Don’t just change it up now, just stick with what I was doing.’”

 

“Yeah, this is my two-for-two,” said Busch added, whose car was sponsored in both races by the NHL’s Florida Panthers. “I’d love to come back. I’m out for the year, but the rest of these guys can put on a show for you.”

Johnny Benson Jr to Race in SRX at Berlin

1995 NASCAR Busch Series Champ & 2008 NASCAR Truck Series

 

Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) has announced that Johnny Benson Jr. will join the field at Berlin Raceway on August 3rd in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This will be Benson’s SRX debut. Johnny Benson Jr., a Grand Rapids native, has won races across all three major NASCAR series, including 14 in the NASCAR Truck Series. Benson’s career accomplishments include winning the 1993 ASA National Tour Championship, 1995 NASCAR Busch Series Championship, and the 2008 NASCAR Truck Series Championship.

 

"I'm really excited to have the opportunity to race in the SRX series. Not only to compete against some of the best drivers in the country, but to return to my home track, Berlin Raceway,” said Johnny Benson Jr.

 

“It’s not often you have the opportunity to invite a good friend and a multiple different series champion to drive in SRX at his hometown track,” said Don Hawk, SRX Chief Executive Officer. “I believe this announcement will be warmly received by all those great race fans at Berlin Raceway.”

 

SRX will air on six consecutive Thursday nights at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN and the ESPN App, bringing back the iconic “ESPN Thursday Night Thunder” branding.

A late pass on Jesse Love with two to go gave William Sawalich his third win of 2023

For 99 percent of Saturday’s Berlin ARCA 200 at Berlin Raceway, it appeared Jesse Love would become the 18th different driver to win four consecutive races in the ARCA Menards Series.

 

An almost certain victory for Love evaporated in the final two laps as he struggled to navigate slower traffic, which allowed William Sawalich to muscle Love out of the way coming to the white flag and take his first victory in the headlining ARCA Menards Series division.

Sawalich would have preferred a cleaner route around Love for the win, but he was more than happy to celebrate in Victory Lane with his Joe Gibbs Racing crew after fighting all evening just to keep Love within his line of sight.

 

“[The pass] was a little bit more dirty than I wanted it [to be], but it’s the last lap,” Sawalich said. “I’ve had that happen to me before and [Love] totally had a lap to get me back. I didn’t think we’d be able to get him, but lapped cars helped for sure.”

 




“[This win] is very cool and very special,” Sawalich said. “We’re going to enjoy this one until Elko.”

What to Know about Berlin Raceway Ahead of Saturday's Race

ARCA Menards Series Heads to Berlin Raceway

 

Berlin Raceway at first glance appears to be your typical short track, a paved oval slightly less than a half-mile in length. In reality, for drivers, the 7/16-mile track in Marne, Michigan, is one of the toughest short tracks in the nation.

 

In 2014, Berlin Raceway became Berlin Raceway and Entertainment Complex with a multi-million dollar facility upgrade and additional events like concerts and monster truck shows. Berlin became a NASCAR-sanctioned Home Track in 2016.

 

The track has hosted the ARCA Menards Series multiple times dating back to 1958. ARCA Menards Series (national) heads to Berlin Raceway on June 17.

RACE FACTS:

CREW CHIEF HANDOUT: The starting field for the Berlin ARCA 200 is limited to 26 starters plus provisionals. This event will run under the 2023 ARCA Menards Series rules, procedures, regulations, and specifications.

 

QUALIFYING: Two consecutive laps qualifying. No adjustments or repairs may be made on car after taking the green flag at Start/Finish line. All cars must make a qualifying attempt, and all drivers must practice before they can qualify.

 

RACE PIT STOP: Oval break pit stop procedure. Breaks at or near the conclusion of Laps 75 and 125. All cars will be required to make at least one pit stop prior to last 10 laps of race. No adding or moving tires to or from pit box once race has started. (Learn about all of ARCA’s pit stop procedures here.)

 

The maximum tire allotment available for this event is as follows: Per ARCA Rulebook, maximum number of tires allowed in pit box for use in race is six (6).

As the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East prepares to celebrate its past while looking at its very bright future with the running of the Busch North Throwback 100 tomorrow, you can enjoy the series' last race at Michigan's Berlin Raceway.




Todd Gilliland (No. 16 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota)

  • • Is the reigning NASCAR K&N Pro Series West champion, having scored six wins, 11 top fives and 13 top 10s in 14 races in 2016.
  • • Became the youngest champion in NASCAR touring series history at 16 years, five months, and joined his grandfather Butch Gilliland as a K&N West champion (1997).
  • • Won four of the first five K&N Pro Series West races this season, including a sweep of Twin 100s at Irwindale on March 25, to give him 12 career K&N Pro Series wins.
  • • Won the most recent race at Berlin for his first win of the season in the East.

  • • Sits fifth in the overall standings with three top fives and four top 10s in six races this season.
  • • Posted a career-best finish of second at Memphis.
  • • Won the pole for both legs of the Twin 100s at South Boston on May 6, his first two career series poles.
  • • Finished third in the most recent race at Berlin for his third straight top five.
  • • Will honor 1987 Stafford Motor Speedway winner Tommy Houston as part of the throwback event.

Harrison Burton (No. 12 DEX Imaging Toyota)

  • • Holds the K&N Pro Series East points lead with six top fives and seven top 10s in six races this season.
  • • Won at Bristol for his first career K&N Pro Series win.
  • • Won at Memphis for his third win in a four-race stretch.

Todd Gilliland captured his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series East win of the season with a victory in the Stars & Stripes 150 at Berlin Raceway on Saturday. #NASCAR


Todd Gilliland captured his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series East win of the season with a victory in the Stars & Stripes 150 at Berlin Raceway on Saturday.

It marked the second series win in 12 career starts for the Sherrills Ford, North Carolina 17-year-old – who drives the No. 16 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry for Bill McAnally Racing.

Gilliland, who started third on the grid, dropped to sixth in the first portion of the event – as he and other early front runners appeared content to fall back and conserve. He worked his way up to third just before the midway break at Lap 77. His steady progression continued in the second half of the race. He charged out front on Lap 120 and stretched out more than a 4-second lead in the final stages of the event.

After encountering flat tires and other such issues while running out front in previous races this season, Gilliland and his BMR crew were relieved to reach the checkered flag without any trouble on Saturday. #NASCAR

“This is probably the most excited I’ve ever been to win a race,” said Gilliland, a member of the NASCAR Next program that spotlights NASCAR’s rising stars. “It’s so special after everything we’ve gone through.”



The victory capped off a solid weekend for the NAPA team.

“The weekend went really smooth,” he said. “We weren’t the best car in the first practice. From there, we made really good adjustments to the NAPA Toyota.”

Despite missing his marks in time trials and qualifying third, Gilliland said he was confident he had a car to win the race. He and other early front runners opted to drop back early.

“We just tried to stay in a distance so we could get back up there in a short amount of time,” he said. “It worked this time. These races, when you conserve your tires, you never know what the right strategy will be. Everything worked out great.”



Gilliland, second in the championship standings, closed to within 19 points of first place; as the series is at the halfway point of the season, with seven of 14 races complete. He has one win, four top-five, and seven top-10 finishes.

For Saturday’s Stars & Stripes 150, the BMR team proudly donned special shirts in support of the NAPA AUTO PARTS “Get Back and Give Back” Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund program.
